The Rt Hon. the Lord Bates was born Michael Bates on 26 May 1961 , and is a Conservative Life peer sitting in the House of Lords since 30 June 2008. He previously sat in the House Of Commons as MP for Langbaurgh.


Lord Bates is currently Minister of State (Department for International Development), a government position he has held since October 2016.

In the past, Lord Bates has held the position of Minister of State (Home Office) (2015 to 2016), Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Home Office) (2014 to 2015), Lord in Waiting (HM Household) (Whip) (2013 to 2014), Lords Spokesperson (Department for Work and Pensions) (2013 to 2014), Paymaster General (HM Treasury) (1996 to 1997), Lord Commissioner (HM Treasury) (Whip) (1995 to 1996), Assistant Whip (HM Treasury) (1994 to 1995) in government.

He was Shadow Minister (Business, Innovation and Skills) (2009 to 2010) in opposition.

He was Deputy Chairman of Committees (Lords), Deputy Chair, Conservative Party.
