The Rt Hon. the Baroness Shephard of Northwold was born Gillian Patricia Shephard on 22 January 1940 in England, and is a Conservative Life peer sitting in the House of Lords since 21 June 2005. She previously sat in the House Of Commons as MP for South West Norfolk.

In the past, Baroness Shephard of Northwold has held the position of Secretary of State for Education and Employment (1995 to 1997), Secretary of State for Education and Science (1994 to 1995), Secretary of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1993 to 1994), Secretary of State for Employment (1992 to 1993), Minister of State (HM Treasury) (1990 to 1992), Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Social Security) (1989 to 1990) in government.
