Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael

Orkney and Shetland


Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael was born Alistair Morrison Carmichael on 15 July 1965 in Islay, Scotland and is the Liberal Democrat MP for Orkney and Shetland.

Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael ceased to be a member of the House of Commons on 03 May 2017 (general election).


In the past, Mr Alistair Carmichael has held the position of Secretary of State for Scotland (2013 to 2015), Comptroller (HM Household) (Deputy Chief Whip, House of Commons) (2010 to 2013) in government.

He was Liberal Democrat Spokesperson (Home Affairs) (2015 to 2017), Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland (2008 to 2010), Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (2007 to 2010), Shadow Secretary of State for Transport (2006 to 2007), Shadow Spokesperson (Home Affairs) (2005 to 2006), Shadow Spokesperson (Energy and Climate Change) (2001 to 2005) in opposition.
