The Rt Hon. the Lord Boateng was born Paul Yaw Boateng on 14 June 1951 in England, and is a Labour Life peer sitting in the House of Lords since 27 June 2010. He previously sat in the House Of Commons as MP for Brent South.

In the past, Lord Boateng has held the position of Chief Secretary to the Treasury (2002 to 2005), Financial Secretary (HM Treasury) (2001 to 2002), Minister of State (Home Office) (1998 to 2001), Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Health) (1997 to 1998) in government.

He was Shadow Minister (Business, Innovation and Skills) (1992 to 1997), Shadow Spokesperson (Business, Innovation and Skills) (1989 to 1992) in opposition.
