Rt Hon Tom Brake MP

Carshalton and Wallington


Rt Hon Tom Brake MP was born Thomas Anthony Brake on 06 May 1962 in Melton Mowbray, England and is the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington.


Currently sitting on the Commons Reference Group on Representation and Inclusion (since November 2016), Tom Brake does not chair at this time.

He has in the past sat on Members Estimate (Jul 2015 to May 2017), House of Commons Commission (Jul 2015 to May 2017), Committee of Selection (Nov 2014 to Mar 2015), Home Affairs Committee (Mar 2008 to May 2010), Crossrail Bill (Nov 2007 to Nov 2007), Transport Committee (Jul 2002 to Nov 2003), Accomodation & Works (Jun 2001 to Jun 2003), Transport Sub-committee (Jan 1999 to Jan 2000), Environment Sub-committee (Jul 1997 to Jun 2001), Environment, Transport & Regional Affairs (Jul 1997 to Jun 2001).


Tom Brake is currently Liberal Democrat Spokesperson (Foreign Affairs), an opposition position he has held since July 2015.

In addition to this role, he is also Liberal Democrat Chief Whip, Liberal Democrat Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.

In the past, Tom Brake has held the position of Assistant Whip (HM Treasury) (2014 to 2015), Parliamentary Secretary and Deputy Leader of the House of Commons (2012 to 2015) in government.

He was Shadow Minister (Home Affairs) (2008 to 2010), Shadow Minister (Olympics and London) (2007 to 2010), Shadow Minister (Communities and Local Government) (2006 to 2007), Shadow Secretary of State for International Development (2005 to 2006), Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (2001 to 2005), Opposition Whip (Commons) (2000 to 2004), Shadow Spokesperson (Communities and Local Government) (1999 to 2001), Shadow Spokesperson (Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) (1997 to 1999) in opposition.
