Dr Alasdair McDonnell was born Alasdair McDonnell on 01 September 1949 in Cushendall, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland and is the Social Democratic & Labour Party MP for Belfast South.

Dr Alasdair McDonnell ceased to be a member of the House of Commons on 03 May 2017 (general election).


He was Shadow SDLP Chief Whip (2010 to 2015), Shadow SDLP Spokesperson (Culture, Media and Sport) (2010 to 2015), Shadow SDLP Spokesperson (Business, Innoviation and Skills) (2009 to 2015), Shadow Minister (Europe) (2008 to 2010), Shadow Spokesperson (Northern Ireland) (2008 to 2010), Shadow Spokesperson (Business, Innovation and Skills) (2007 to 2009), Shadow Spokesperson (Work and Pensions) (2005 to 2007), Shadow Spokesperson (Education) (2005 to 2008), Shadow Spokesperson (Treasury) (2005 to 2007), Shadow SDLP Spokesperson (Health) (2005 to 2015) in opposition.

He was Leader of the Social Democratic & Labour Party.
