The Earl of Courtown was born James Stopford on 19 March 1954 , and is a Conservative Excepted Hereditary peer sitting in the House of Lords since 24 July 1979.


Currently sitting on the Finance Committee (Lords) (since September 2016), The Earl of Courtown does not chair at this time.

He has in the past sat on Digital Skills (Jun 2014 to Feb 2015), Inheritance and Trustees’ Powers Bill [HL] (Oct 2013 to Dec 2013), EU Sub Committee D - Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment and Energy (May 2012 to Feb 2013), EU Sub-Committee G - Social Policies and Consumer Protection (Oct 2011 to May 2012), Hybrid Instruments Committee (Lords) (Dec 1999 to May 2001).


The Earl of Courtown is currently Captain of the Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard (HM Household) (Deputy Chief Whip, House of Lords) , a government position he has held since July 2016.

In the past, The Earl of Courtown has held the position of Lord in Waiting (HM Household) (Whip) (2015 to 2016) in government.
