The Rt Hon. the Lord McAvoy

Life peer


The Rt Hon. the Lord McAvoy was born Thomas McLaughlin McAvoy on 14 December 1943 , and is a Labour Life peer sitting in the House of Lords since 22 June 2010. He previously sat in the House Of Commons as MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West and Glasgow Rutherglen.


Lord McAvoy is currently Opposition Deputy Chief Whip (Lords), an opposition position he has held since May 2015.

In addition to this role, he is also Shadow Spokesperson (Northern Ireland), Shadow Spokesperson (Scotland).

In the past, Lord McAvoy has held the position of Treasurer of HM Household (Deputy Chief Whip, House of Commons) (2008 to 2010), Comptroller (HM Household) (Deputy Chief Whip, House of Commons) (1997 to 2008) in government.

He was Opposition Whip (Lords) (2010 to 2015) in opposition.
