The Rt Hon. the Lord Reid of Cardowan

The Rt Hon. the Lord Reid of Cardowan was born John Reid on 08 May 1947 , and is a Labour Life peer sitting in the House of Lords since 16 July 2010. He previously sat in the House Of Commons as MP for Airdrie and Shotts, Hamilton North and Bellshill and Motherwell North.


Currently sitting on the International Relations Committee (since May 2016), Lord Reid of Cardowan does not chair at this time.

He has in the past sat on Modernisation of the House of Commons (Apr 2003 to Jul 2003), Public Accounts Committee (Jan 1989 to Dec 1989). He has also chaired in the past Modernisation of the House of Commons (Apr 2003 to Jul 2003).


In the past, Lord Reid of Cardowan has held the position of Home Secretary (2006 to 2007), Secretary of State for Defence (2005 to 2006), Secretary of State for Health (2003 to 2005), Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons (Privy Council Office) (2003 to 2003), Minister without Portfolio and Labour Party Chair (2002 to 2003), Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (2001 to 2002), Secretary of State for Scotland (1999 to 2001), Minister of State (Department for Environment, Transport and the Regions) (1998 to 1999), Minister of State (Ministry of Defence) (1997 to 1998) in government.

He was Party Chair, Labour Party, Member, Labour Party National Executive Committee.
